Larry David/The 1975 February 6, 2016

So far, the second half has shown to be just as good as the first half. On the last SNL, Ronda Rousey and Selena Gomez made their SNL debuts and they delivered. Rousey was a great host and Gomez did a great job as the musical guest. I’d actually like to see both of them return to the SNL stage in the future. Some highlights from the last episode include:
-A cold open about the most recent Trump rally with Tina reprising her Sarah Palin impression.
-A monologue that played to Rousey’s strengths and an appearance from Selena Gomez.
-A sketch about #OscarsSoWhite.
-Another parody of The Bachelor.
-Several jokes about the blizzard.
-The return of Leslie and Willie to the Update desk.
-The return of “Settl”.

On this episode of SNL, Larry David makes his debut as host and The 1975 make their debut as the musical guest. It really looks like a good idea for the man who’s impersonating a Presidential candidate to host as well as to have a musical guest whose name is the same as the year the show first premiered. I thought this was a funny episode and David did a great job hosting. Here’s my take on the episode.

Sketch Rundown:
Message from Ted Cruz:
I absolutely love Taran”s impression of Ted Cruz. I feel that the impression really captures the essences of Cruz. I loved the line “From the side, I look like a far side cartoon.” I loved Kate appearing as one of his daughters. I also loved the phrase “Trumper tantrum”. I also loved the laugh and the book cover. Overall, I thought it was a funny cold open.
Larry David Monologue:
To be honest, I didn’t really know what to expect from Larry David. I thought his stand-up routine during the monologue seemed like typical Larry David. I loved the line “I have a dipless house.” I thought the monologue was good and pretty funny.
FBI Academy:
I thought this sketch was great and I really liked Cecily”s character a lot. I thought Larry David was great in this sketch and the makeup job was excellent. I loved the line “Can a bitch get a doughnut?”. I thought Bobby was great with his character. I loved at the end the Larry David’s character, Kevin Roberts, was the Chief Designer.
Bern Your Enthusiasm:
I absolutely loved this sketch even though I’ve never seen an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. I loved Leslie, Cecily, Jay, and Taran in this sketch. One of my favorite lines from this sketch is “I’m not a popper”. I loved Larry David as Bernie Sanders in this sketch. Hands down, this sketch was probably my favorite sketch of the night.
Sinking Ship:
I didn’t expect to see the real Bernie Sanders in this sketch even though I knew he would appear in this episode. I thought Larry David’s character was funny and I loved his line “I can say it. It’s olden times!”. For the most part, I thought this sketch was just okay.
Totino’s Ad:
To be honest, I’m surprised they brought this sketch back but I figured they would do something related to the SuperBowl. I didn’t expect the dark twist at the end. I did love the ad for The X-Files at the end which explained why this sketch was a little creepy.
The 1975 “The Sound” Performance:
I loved seeing Bernie Sanders introduce the song alongside Larry David. I also loved how Bernie was doing an impression of Larry David. As for The 1975, I really liked the song and I liked the performance. I heard the song on the radio before this episode and really liked it then.
Weekend Update:
I loved the jokes about the Republican debate as well as Jost’s reactions to the videos. I loved Kate’s Sturdy Barbie character and it really makes me want to see a Barbie doll like this. I liked the joke about Black History Month. I loved seeing Jon Rudnitsky at the desk as himself. I loved the interaction between him and Jost, “You’re not a regular guy. I mean, you’re on SNL. Literally nobody knows that, Colin.” I loved the dance and I was crying from laughing so much! Seeing something like this really makes me hope that the show keeps him. The joke after that they did about mayonnaise was funny. I was really surprised to see Ben Stiller as Zoolander and Owen Wilson as Hansel show up. However, I did like how they were talking about politics. I loved the line “They just had the Iowa couscous” and how they called Ted Cruz “Tom”. I loved the Trump jokes, which included “orange mocha crappaccino”, “hot mess”, and “second place”. I also thought it was funny they called Che Lester Holt. Overall, I thought this was another very solid Update.
Songwriting Class:
I was surprised and really happy to see Pete as the lead in a sketch. I loved how they made up the phrase “Froghattan”. I also loved seeing Pete try to sing. I thought this sketch was just okay and the typical post-Update sketch.
SuperBowl Greeting from Cam Newton and Peyton Manning:
I thought this was a good bit and I’m not surprised they did this because of it being SuperBowl weekend. I loved the impressions and how they were singing the song “Ebony and Ivory”. I loved the impressions and I thought the harmonizing was funny. I thought the police bit at the end was funny. I ended up really liking this sketch and found it funny.
The 1975 “Love Me” Performance:
As for this performance from The 1975, I thought it was another good performance. I did like this song as well but not as much as the first one. Throughout both performances, I was wondering why the lead singer wasn’t wearing a shirt but wearing a blazer or a jacket. Regardless, I found The 1975 to be very entertaining and I have a feeling we’ll be seeing them on the show again.
Last Call:
To be honest, I was a little surprised they brought this sketch back. However, I loved the description of a Kentucky Nightcap, “That’s a bourbon with a Tylenol PM floating.” I also thought the vodka cheddar drink was funny. I loved Kenan’s reactions as well as the mini blinds he was wearing towards the end. One of my favorite lines had to be “Well, looks like we both just bought a ticket to the Kiss concert”. I thought this was a funny yet weird way to end the show.

Overall, I thought this was a great show. I thought Larry David did a great job hosting and The 1975 did a great job as the musical guest. I’m pretty sure they’ll both be back on the show in the future.

This has been my take on the SNL episode hosted by Larry David with musical guest The 1975. I’ll be back soon with a review of SNL hosted by Melissa McCarthy with musical guest Kanye West.
